Tanuki Raw

The Spot

This mysterious sushi haven had been appearing quite frequently all over my Instagram feed. So naturally, I went to discover more for myself and was quite shocked to find that it had been tucked away right in the heart of orchard! The menu offers a wide variety of lunch bowls filled with hearty salmon goodness and exquisite appetizers such as Truffle Sweet Potato Fries. Apart from all their unique dishes, they also serve oysters! BONUS! Unfortunately, they set you back at $6 a piece or $50 for a dozen.

What I Had

I ordered the Golden Kani Maki ($18.90), Salmon Kaisen ($16), a Ginger Lemonade ($10) and of course I had to have the Oysters ($30 for 1/2 dozen).

I started with the Golden Kani Maki which is a soft shell crab maki drizzled in salted egg hollandaise. This hands down won me over. Never had I have the pleasure of having soft shell crab in my sushi before, let alone in salted egg hollandaise?? UNREAL. Only wished it could be a tad more affordable as it only served 4 portions.

Next was the Salmon Kaisen which was surprisingly delightful. I expected to find ordinary cuts of salmon with plain rice but their signature mixed rice actually complimented the salmon sashimi wonderfully. A bowl of happiness I call it, leaving you quite full in the belly, definitely worth the money.

The Ginger Lemonade was ordered mainly on impulse due to the sweltering heat. I would say it definitely quenched my thirst and even achieved a refreshing pop of tang that I really liked. Although, I very much felt that it wasn’t worth the $10.

Last but not the least, the Oysters! Being an oyster lover, I was beyond ecstatic to find freshly shucked oysters right in the heart of the shopping belt. Although slightly pricey, I cheerfully slurped them all down with dabs of lemon and Tabasco.

What I Loved

I was seated at the bar which meant lots of entertaining spins and tricks from the bartender. Whom, by the way, was very easy on the eyes (LADIES). They also have happy hour from 5 to 8pm where you can get freshly shucked oysters for $2 (limited to 6 per drink), and beer pints at $12! I love how I finally found a chill spot with sushi, sashimi and oysters by the bar rather than the average cake and coffeehouse.
