Tonkotsu Kazan

The Spot

Exploring the newly upgraded North Point City, I stumbled upon this eatery serving up a long line of customers. The ramen joint is famous for their Volcano dishes and is almost always full of patrons ordering them.

What I Had

For starters, the Yaki Gyoza 6 pieces ($5) was piping hot and bursting with flavourful juices. With generous fillings of meat, the dumplings itself were soft and moist on the inside, yet crisp on the outside. Both affordable and satisfying, definitely a fan of this.

Deciding to go against the flow, we got the Karamiso Ramen ($12.80). The broth on its own is heavenly and flavourful. Not to mention the ramen noodle itself is soft and springy, just the way I like it! Topped with a spoonful of their own miso paste and served alongside a yummy chunk of chashu, a hearty soft boiled egg and a sheet of seaweed, the dish was a slurping good time.

Hot Stone Curry Rice with Fried Chicken ($11) was something quite different to see on the menu. This one comes with the steamed Japanese rice all wrapped up so as you unravel it, all the juices sort of mingle and creates a yummy mix. Quite a treat!

Keeping up with the theme of slurping, we got the Shoyu Ramen ($13). Accompanied with the usual, the broth here was distinctly different with the soy sauce (shoyu) flavour being more distinguished. Though don’t get me wrong, it was far from salty, definitely a satisfying brew.

What I Loved

Inexpensive! I love a nice warm meal that fills you up both in the tummy and in the heart. With a menu that has something for all, be it rice or ramen, or even a small bite of yummy gyozas, they have it. Not to mention throughout the eatery, on the tables are lil baskets of eggs (they are not for display). They are actually free for you! Yes free eggs, for you to add to your meals, genius!
