Tucked behind the main strip in Fremantle, amongst many of the hotels and inns in the neighbourhood, lies The Federal Hotel. The establishment has both an indoor and outdoor seating with a tentage to sport rainy weather. Personally, I very much preferred the outdoor seating with the ambience lighting to set a warm, cosy vibe in the evenings.
What I Had
To start with, we had a few bites of the Beer Battered Steak Fries ($8) served with a yummy side of aioli.
The 300g Angus Porterhouse ($38) comes along with a side salad and beer battered fries. You also get to choose your sauce, either red wine, peppercorn, or mushroom. Having tried all 3, I have to say the red wine does compliment the meal much more. The steak itself, I ordered in a medium-rare doneness and definitely had a delightfully smoky finish.
Up next, the delectable Federal Hotel Bangers & Mash ($26). Cumberland sausages laid on top of a bed of mashed potatoes over a spread of pea puree, topped with caramelised onion gravy. I have to say, not being a fan of peas, this dish really surprised me with its untraditional twist.
Served with federal sauce, house pickles and chips, the 150g Harvey Beef Burger ($22) through a tad bit pricey, was both enjoyable and appetizing.
What I Loved
Federal has daily promotions to get the ball rolling! With $17 steaks & house pints/wines every Friday, you might find yourself heading down pretty often. They even have free pool on Mondays to chase those blues away. Along with a well-stocked bar, they have several beers on tap including Guinness, all at decent prices per pint. Definitely a favourite haunt of mine.
